Drug Therapy for Mesothelioma

Drug therapy is a treatment option for mesothelioma patients. Like other treatments, this may or may not be your best treatment solution, as its success depends on the individual. Factors such as your age, current health status, mesothelioma stage, etc. affect which treatment methods would be the right choice. Speak with your medical team to help you determine your treatment plan.

Drug therapy is a method of taking drugs that search for and kill cancerous cells. Drug therapy is usually used in conjunction with another treatment method. It can be combined with surgery or radiation therapy. Although many drugs have been tried, most have had only a slight effect on the cancerous cells produced from mesothelioma. A few examples of these drugs include Alimta, Locastatin, Megace, Onconase, and Vinorealbine.

Other methods of drug therapy include antiangiogenesis. This aims to shrink or even eradicate a tumor by cutting off the cell’s blood supply and nourishment. Another is hyperthermia, which increases the body’s temperature. Interferon, another method, decreases the growth rate of malignant cells. Lastly, interleukin is a drug therapy that encourages T-cells to find and kill the cancerous cells.

Like with any treatment option, you must consider how you will treat pain. You can discuss with your medical team what pain-relieving remedies you have available to you based on your treatment plan. It is important to be honest and open with your physician regarding the pain you are feeling. Mesothelioma is a very difficult disease to go through, let alone with constant pain. Let your physician know at each visit what level of pain you are feeling as well as what methods are helping to decrease this pain.

There are treatment options besides drug therapy. As mentioned, this is an option that is usually implemented along with another method. It is important that your physician understands how you feel about the treatment plan he or she wishes to start for you. Besides knowing your physical state or what stage of mesothelioma you are in, the physician should know where you are emotionally. This is an important factor in the treatment decision process.

Whether it’s drug therapy or any other treatment process you undergo, it is important to understand what your rights are as someone who was exposed to asbestos and now suffers from mesothelioma. You need to contact an attorney that has experience in this area of law, as it is quite complicated in several respects. You also need to contact this attorney right away, as the law places a time limit on your ability to bring a claim, no matter how valid.

A prognosis is the predicted outcome of the disease along with the likely course of symptoms the patient may experience.  In general, almost every prognosis for victims and families suffering from mesothelioma will depend upon the stage of the disease the patient has reached.

Pain Management for Mesothelioma Patients
Being able to deal with mesothelioma is one thing, but to endure the physical pain that goes along with it is entirely different.  Most pain caused by cancer can be treated or at least controlled.
