Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma

Chemotherapy may be a treatment option for some patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma. The treatment plan you will choose depends on a number of factors including your age, your current health status, and your current stage of mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy involves the use of chemicals to kill the cancerous cells. The goal is to kill existing mesothelioma cancerous cells in order to stop new growth and the spread of the cancer to other areas of the body. There are at least 50 different drugs that can be used by themselves or as a combination to fight cancer cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy has not shown to be very effective against mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy can be administered after surgery if all the cancer cells were not removed during surgery. Chemotherapy can also be administered by taking a pill or through an intravenous injection.

Chemotherapy injects chemicals into the bloodstream, and these chemicals are meant to kill cancer cells all over the body. The bloodstream is an excellent way to attack cancer cells that have begun to spread throughout the body. As with other methods, there are some risks involved with chemotherapy, including tube blockage or infection. Infusion pumps are a new method of implementing chemotherapy. This is a portable way to inject drugs into the bloodstream.

Chemotherapy can be a difficult treatment to handle as there are a lot of different side effects involved with this treatment. Chemotherapy attacks cancerous cells, but it also attacks normal cells, and one of the most common side effects can be hair loss.

Chemotherapy can also make you feel very ill. Today, there are some methods, including taking steroids, which helps to alleviate this side effect. Another side effect is the killing of cells within the bone marrow. When the numbers of cells in this area are decreased, the body’s ability to recover and repair itself decreases. A decrease of fertility in men and women can also be a side effect of chemotherapy.

There is a lot to learn about how chemotherapy works and how it affects your body. If you suspect that you may have mesothelioma and/or have been exposed to asbestos, contact an attorney today. You need to understand what your rights are in matters relating to mesothelioma, and you only have a certain amount of time to assert them.

Mesothelioma Patient Information
Mesothelioma Disease Timeline
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, after further test are performed, a physician can determine what stage of the disease you have reached.

Prognosis for Victims and Families
A prognosis is the predicted outcome of the disease along with the likely course of symptoms the patient may experience.  In general, almost every prognosis for victims and families suffering from mesothelioma will depend upon the stage of the disease the patient has reached.

Pain Management for Mesothelioma Patients
Being able to deal with mesothelioma is one thing, but to endure the physical pain that goes along with it is entirely different.  Most pain caused by cancer can be treated or at least controlled.
